Two Weeks Old March 27, 2005

Today Benjamin is two weeks old! and it already feels like he's growing up too fast. I've finally got the Birth Story posted. We've been home from the hospital since March 17th. The jaundice is gone. Benji still sleeps lots but he eats really, really well and the only thing that's yellow now is the contents of his diapers. We've had some trouble getting Benjamin to breastfeed. I'm sure this is due to the jaundice and the unconventional feeding methods we had to use while in the hospital. When Benji refuses to nurse, we "finger-feed" him with a small tube attatched to our fingers. It's a painstakingly slow way to get him to eat, but it's the best bet for preventing nipple confusion. I'm pretty sure we'll get the hang of nursing more and more with each day.

Babies lose weight the first couple days after they're born and are expected to get back to their birthweight by two weeks old. Well, Benji exceeded his birthweight by three ounces at nine days old. When the doctor told me that, I remembered what someone had said once about how breastfeeding is like raising prize tomatoes--the plumper they get the better. I felt like I'd just received a blue ribbon for my plump little tomato.

We desperately need to buy a digital camera, but with hospital bills looming over our heads, it doesn't look like we'll be able to do so anytime soon. Maybe Jason will have to borrow the digital camera from work so we can get some pictures up soon.
